SENATOR FLETCHER: But you never heard of that ship any more?
MR. BULEY: No; we could not see anything of her in the morning when it was daylight. She was stationary all night; I am very positive for about three hours she was stationary, and then she made tracks.
SENATOR FLETCHER: How far away was she?
MR. BULEY: I should judge she was about 3 miles.
SENATOR FLETCHER: Why could not she see your skyrockets?
MR. BULEY: She could not help seeing them. She was close enough to see our lights and to see the ship itself, and also the rockets. She was bound to see them.
SENATOR FLETCHER: You are quite certain that it was a ship?
MR. BULEY: Yes, sir; it was a ship.
SENATOR FLETCHER: How many lights did you see?
MR. BULEY: I saw two masthead lights.
SENATOR FLETCHER: No stern lights?
MR. BULEY: You could not see the stern lights. You could not see her bow lights. We were in the boat at the time.
SENATOR FLETCHER: Did you see that ship before you were in the water?
MR. BULEY: Yes, sir; I saw it from the ship. That is what we told the passengers. We said, "There is a steamer coming to our assistance." That is what kept them quiet, I think.
SENATOR FLETCHER: Did she come toward you bow on?
MR. BULEY: Yes, sir; bow on toward us; and then she stopped, and the lights seemed to go right by us.
SENATOR FLETCHER: If she had gone by you, she would have been to your stern?
MR. BULEY: She was stationary there for about three hours, I think, off our port, there, and when we were in the boat we all made for her, and she went by us. The northern lights are just like a searchlight, but she disappeared. That was astern of where the ship went down.
SENATOR FLETCHER: She gave no signal?
MR. BULEY: No signal whatever. I could not say whether she gave a signal from the bridge or not. You could not see from where we were, though.
SENATOR FLETCHER: Do you suppose she was fastened in the ice?
MR. BULEY: I could not say what she was.

LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Mais vous n’avez plus entendu parler de ce navire?
M. BULEY : Non; on ne pouvait rien voir de lui le matin, quand il faisait jour. Il était stationnaire toute la nuit; je suis très sûr qu’il a été stationnaire pendant environ trois heures, puis il est parti.

M. BULEY : Il ne pouvait s’empêcher de les voir. Il était assez près pour voir nos lumières et voir le navire lui-même, ainsi que les fusées. Il devait les voir.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Vous êtes tout à fait certain que c’était un navire?
M. BULEY : Oui, monsieur; c’était un navire.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Combien de lumières avez-vous vues?
M. BULEY : J’ai vu deux phares de mât.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Pas de feux arrière?
M. BULEY : On ne pouvait pas voir les feux arrière. On ne pouvait pas voir ses feux avant. Nous étions dans le canot à ce moment-là.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Avez-vous vu ce navire avant d’être dans l’eau?
M. BULEY : Oui, monsieur; je l’ai vu du navire. C’est ce que nous avons dit aux passagers. Nous avons dit : « Un vapeur vient à notre secours. » C’est ce qui les a fait taire, je crois.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : S’est-il approché de vous pour par l’avant?
M. BULEY : Oui, monsieur; par l’avant vers nous; puis il s’est arrêtée, et les lumières semblaient passer à côté de nous.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Si il s’était diriger vers vous, il aurait été à votre poupe?
M. BULEY : Il était stationnaire là-bas pendant environ trois heures, je crois, au large du côté bâbord, là-bas, et quand nous étions dans le canot, nous avons tout fait, et il est nous a quitté. Les aurores boréales sont comme un projecteur, mais il a disparu. C’était à l’arrière de l’endroit où le navire a coulé.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Il n’a pas donné de signal?
M. BULEY : Aucun signal. Je ne pourrais pas dire si il a donné un signal de la passerelle ou non. On ne pouvait pas voir d’où nous étions, cependant.
LE SÉNATEUR FLETCHER : Pensez-vous qu’il était retenu par la glace?
M. BULEY : Je ne saurais dire ce qu’il était.
